SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS IN TANZANIA

       School Room
Education cannot be taken for granted in Tanzania. All secondary school education requires a tuition payment that is set by the Tanzanian government. The current tuition payment is about $480, which includes room and board. This amount is an extreme hardship for many Tanzanian families who have an average annual family income of less than $300.

We are working with Lutheran Mission Cooperation Tanzania to insure that any funds collected are forwarded to the schools of the Meru Diocese to cover educational costs for needy students. If you can help with this urgent need, make checks payable to Greater Milwaukee Synod and on the memo line indicate Meru Secondary School Scholarships.

Education in Diocese of Meru

The Diocese owns and manages the following education centers:

  1. Leguruki Vocational Training School - The School offers post primary skills training in mechanical engineering, masonry, carpentry, home economics, tailoring and electrical engineering for three years. It admits both boys and girls from the country. Candidates sit for National Class III and II Trade Tests that enable them to be employed in the public sector or seek self-employment.
  2. Usa River Rehabilitation Center is a training center for the physically handicapped. It offers skills in shoe making, carpentry, tailoring to both boys and girls who either have or don't have primary school education. Training is residential and it takes three years. The school admits students from all over the country who are sponsored by either church organizations or by their parents or guardians.
  3. Nkoaranga, Kikatiti and Ngarenanyuki Secondary schools offer post primary formal education from Form I to Form IV to boys and girls from villages around the schools and other parts of the country. They are community owned schools but sponsored and managed by the Diocese through governing boards. All the three schools have boarding facilities for girls. Ngarenanyuki has dormitory facilities for both boys and girls.
  4. Makumira High School was established in 1973. It has a capacity for 720 students in Forms I to IV and 120 students in forms V and VI. The higher forms are similar to a Junior College or Technical College in the United States. The school has dormitory facilities for over 160 girls and over 300 boys. All the other pupils are day scholars. The school offers subjects that are recognized by the government and all students take national examinations at the end of their courses.
  5. Ailanga Junior Seminary is owned and operated by the Diocese. In addition to the normal High School curriculum, it provides extensive biblical study for which students take a national Bible exam.
