Advent Message from Bishop-elect Jeff
By elcamsadmin - Tuesday, January 12, 2010 :: 105 Views :: Synod News
I'm never sure if Advent ever gets done well in my world. Somehow the candles on the wreath get lit. The Advent hymns get sung. Some of them actually seem to prepare our hearts. Others offer hope to a weary world. Frankly,others seem to do nothing more than leave me begging  for a good medley of Christmas carols. Finally, Christmas comes as a blessed intrusion into a world which never quite manages to get itself under control.

This year was no exception. After a whirlwind of excitement and emotions spawned by a bishop`s election, after battling week of  pre-Christmas crud which I seemed so willing to share with friends and family,after coming to the obvious conclusion that a synod`s great dreams  for mission can come true only amid our collective hard work,Christmas  appeared at the doorstep with little regard for whether any of us is adequately prepared.

There I was on Christmas eve, caught somewhere between the wide-eyed child who longs for a white Christmas and the pragmatic realist of a senior pastor who rejoices that "it don't cost nothin' to plow rain."

Suddenly, quietly, profoundly, on main street and in out of the way places, the Word somehow wriggles its way into our lives and does not disappoint us. What joy!

In this Christmas season, I must thank you for for the trust which has been placed in my hands as the bishop-elect of the Greater Milwaukee Synod. I remain deeply humbled, am anxious to get started and am strangely confident that we walk well together in the next leg of the journey as God's people in this place.

There are a couple of things items of information which might be helpful at this point. My last Sunday at Holy Communion will be on January 31. I have had such a good run there. The parting will be bittersweet for sure. I am also confident that an interim period will reveal many unexplored possibilities for mission during my tenure and offer the opportunity for someone else to have an equally good run.

Some of January will involve bringing closure at Holy Communion. However, folks here are well aware that this synod thing is sort of like jumping into fast-moving water. While my official transition date may be February 1, January will involve a ton of synod responsibilities, beginning with my attendance at the Academy of Bishops the week of Jan. 3.

Staffing of course will be one of the important pieces. Since we have been short-staffed for so long now,there is some sense of urgency for all of us to put together a great staff. That is tempered by the need to to take adequate time and include people in the process who can help build a staff who will serve us well.

What can help right now is to have input from any of you. Let me know what you think we need in terms of staff. Surface names of people who you think would work well on synod staff. Nominate yourselves if you'd like. You will get very little immediate response, but you will provide valuable information and incite in doing so.

Finally, I urge you all to begin the year joining me in dedicating ourselves to the things which really make a difference-prayer, dwelling in scripture,worship, witness, radical service to others, sacrificial giving. These are the true building blocks of our life together. A blessed Christmas.

The Rev. Susan Briehl presents "Preaching in the Year of Luke" Jan. 23
By elcamsadmin - Tuesday, January 12, 2010 :: 43 Views :: Synod News

Mount Carmel LC (8424 W Center St., Milwaukee) welcomes the Rev. Susan Briehl for their Theologian in Residence Weekend, January 23 and 24.  On Saturday, January 23 from 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. she will lead the workshop "Preaching in the Year of Luke."  The workshop will trace themes and images that run like threads through Luke and Acts, weaving together a masterpiece.  She will ask how Luke challenges us to best welcome, trust, embody, and proclaim the "good news" of Christ Jesus that "turns the world upside down" and causes "no little disturbance" in our lives.

All who will be praying, preaching, and teaching Luke in the Greater Milwaukee Synod are welcome. Participants are encouraged to read Luke and Acts to prepare for the workshop, and to bring their bibles with them.  This is a wonderful opportunity to hear one of the brightest theologians in the ELCA today.  There is no cost for the workshop.

Rev. Briehl will preach at the Saturday evening Holden Vespers worship service, and both Sunday services at 8:15 and 10:45.  Between services, she will lead the adult forum "At the Table with Jesus: The View from Emmaus", beginning at 9:30 a.m.

A Lutheran pastor since 1981, Rev. Briehl is currently part of the Valparaiso Project on the Education and Formation of People of Faith and serves as Distinguished Professor of the Art of Ministry at Wartburg Lutheran Seminary, Dubuque, IA.  She is the co-author of Practicing Our Faith: A Guide for Conversation, Learning, and Growth and contributed to the Way to Live Leader's Guide.

By elcamsadmin - Saturday, December 05, 2009 :: 89 Views :: Synod News

MILWAUKEE (ELCA) -- The Rev. Jeffrey S. Barrow was elected Dec. 5 to a six-year term as bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) at a special synod assembly here at Our Savior Lutheran Church.  Barrow, 58, is currently an assistant to the bishop in the synod and senior pastor of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Racine, Wis.

Barrow, who led or was tied for the lead on all ballots, was elected on the 5th ballot for bishop, 209-185 over the Rev. Susan E. Tjornehoj, director for evangelical mission, ELCA Minneapolis Area Synod. The Rev. Joseph G. Crippen, pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church, Northfield, Minn. was also a candidate on the fourth ballot.  There were 36 names on the first or nominating ballot.

"I am very grateful to be a pastor in this church," Barrow told the ELCA News Service in a phone interview. "I am hopeful for what is ahead for the Greater Milwaukee Synod and the wider church."

Barrow added that his experience as a parish pastor was helpful as he worked with congregations in his role as assistant to the bishop.  "I think I will always look at things through the eyes of a parish pastor," he said.

Raised in Billings, Mont., Barrow earned a bachelor's degree in 1973 at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., one of 28 ELCA colleges and universities.  He earned a master of divinity degree in 1979 at Luther Northwestern Seminary (now Luther Seminary), St. Paul, Minn., one of eight ELCA seminaries.

Barrow was ordained in 1979 by the former American Lutheran Church and served as pastor of three congregations -- Zion Lutheran (Arneckeville), Cuero, Texas, and Ascension Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, before he was called to Holy Communion Lutheran Church.  He also served as executive director of the Koinonia Community, Highland Lake, N.Y.

The Rev. David W. Olson has been serving the Greater Milwaukee Synod as interim bishop, following the Sept. 30 resignation of the Rev. Paul W. Stumme-Diers. Stumme-Diers accepted a call to Bethany Lutheran Church, Bainbridge Island, Wash.

The synod council has recommended the new bishop begin Feb. 1, 2010.  Barrow will be installed by the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop, March 14, 2010, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Menomonee Falls, Wis.

Barrow and wife Kate have two children, Jackson and Anneka.  The family resides in Racine.

The ELCA Greater Milwaukee Synod has 91,000 baptized members and 137 congregations in the Greater Milwaukee Area.

"Where does the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America stand?  Together we stand in God's grace," says Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson in a video message released this week, addressing concerns in light of the church council's decision to reduce the church-wide budget by 10%. "Diminished budgets do not diminish our resolve in commitment to be engaged together in the life of the world."

Overview of the 2009 Churchwide Assembly
By elcamsadmin - Thursday, August 27, 2009 :: 291 Views :: Synod News

Dear Partners in Ministry,

"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."  Galatians 6:2

I greet you in the name of Christ from the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Minneapolis, where the voting members of the Greater Milwaukee Synod have served with grace and dedication, with worship and prayer, with considered attention to the business at hand, and with joy and imagination.  We are grateful for your prayers that have accompanied us in our work, and for the interest that has been shown by those who have followed this Assembly on its web-cast.  We are grateful as well for the prayers that will continue to support and encourage this church in the months ahead.

This week at its 2009 Churchwide Assembly the ELCA has has asked itself, "What will be our witness?" and in response to this inquiry has committed itself to even more deeply bear one another's burdens, according to the instructions of the Apostle Paul.  This commitment has taken many shapes over the past week, faithfully responding to the love God first showed to us in Christ.  True to this faith, our time together has been centered in worship each day, constant in prayer, focused upon Scripture, and mindful of our life as the church in all its expressions, including globally and ecumenically.

We adopted an HIV/AIDS Strategy, which resonated with the stated priorities of our global companion churches in El Salvador and Tanzania in combatting the scourge of this pandemic, even as we are made aware of the pain it has inflicted within our own geography.

In solidarity with these same partners, and along with partners through Lutheran World Relief and the LCMS, we committed ourselves to bearing the burdens of those inflicted by malaria through the Lutheran Malaria Initiative, as we collectively seek to eradicate this disease.

"Bearing one another's burdens" takes the form of unifying the church, and breaking down the walls that have divided denominations from sharing the meal of grace, as we overwhelmingly voted to ratify a full-communion agreement with the United Methodist Church.

We recognized the burdens of our neighbors who are new arrivals to this country as we, with a strong majority adopted a resolution seeking Comprehensive Immigration Reform, and gave thanks for ministry of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, and Ralston Deffenbaugh, who has so capably led this work.

The 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly also adopted the Social Statement entitled, "Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust," and the subsequent ministry policy decisions.  In the debate and in the decision to change ministry policy concerning the rostering of those who are in same monogamous, life-long, publicly accountable, same gender relationships, the themes of "loving one's neighbor" and "bearing one another's burdens" were cited as we recognize we are a church that is not of one mind on this subject.  (I strongly encourage you to read the text of Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson's remarks following these votes at http://www.elca.org/assembly on the Web).  The months ahead will be required to bring shape and focus to the particular implementation of this decision (the ELCA Church Council meets in November to consider this work), and even then the system for the rostering of our leaders and the extension of congregational calls will fundamentally be the same, with congregations finally determining whom to call as their pastor in a process guided by the Holy Spirit.

I am grateful for the spirit of communal discernment in our church, and at our Churchwide Assembly.  Through it all we have come to recognize the deep love people have for this church, even as our views might vary as to how best live this out.   This love was evident in the tears in the eyes of everyone in the Assembly hall upon the announcement of the critical votes.  There were tears of joy and tears of sorrow.  I found the tears in my own eyes to be a mixture of the two.  As we "bear one another's burdens," let us do so in such a spirit, as a church united in witness to Christ, who himself wept, but who was raised from death to new life...for our sake.

In Christ, Our Peace,

Bishop Paul Stumme-Diers

ELCA Assembly Opens Ministry to Partnered Gay and Lesbian Lutherans
By drossjones - Friday, August 21, 2009 :: 142 Views :: Synod News

The 2009 Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted today to open the ministry of the church to gay and lesbian pastors and other professional workers living in committed relationships.

The action came by a vote of 559-451 at the highest legislative body of the 4.6 million member denomination. Earlier the assembly also approved a resolution committing the church to find ways for congregations that choose to do so to "recognize, support and hold publicly accountable life-long, monogamous, same gender relationships," though the resolution did not use the word "marriage."

The actions here change the church's policy, which previously allowed gays and lesbians into the ordained ministry only if they remained celibate.

Bishop Paul Stumme-Diers, 48, the second-term Bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod, accepted a call to Bethany Lutheran Church in Bainbridge Island, Washington on Sunday, August 9, 2009, and has announced his resignation as Bishop effective September, 30, 2009. Bethany Lutheran is a mid-size congregation worshipping 200 weekly on the city island in Puget Sound, a community of about 25,000 directly west of Seattle. “When elected to the office of bishop,” writes Stumme-Diers in a letter to synod pastors, “this role of pastor takes a different shape, but there is always the love of the parish that tugs at us as we conduct our ministry. Over the past seven years this attraction to congregational ministry has always been present for me, and recently has become strong enough for me to pursue a parish call.”

While Resolutions 1 and 4 were passed without change, additions were made Resolution 2 on Ending Poverty and Raising Dignity.  Resolution 3 on Human Sexuality was divided into Resolutions 3A and 3B and were passed separately.

Bishop Paul on the H1N1 Flu Virus
By elcamsadmin - Wednesday, May 06, 2009 :: 717 Views :: Synod News
Dear Partners in Ministry,

God's grace and peace to you as we pray for health and healing for those individuals and communities affected by the spread of an influenza virus. It is hard to gauge the severity of such a threat, even as we acknowledge and appreciate the extra precautions being taken by public health officials.  Our concern is always heightened, however, when the more vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected by threats to the public health (add to this a sense of "racial profiling" reported from schoolyards in the news today, directed at those from "countries responsible").  In such a time prayer is certainly the faithful response, along with a level-headed pastoral sensitivity in sanitary precautions as the community gathers (how might we best share the peace, greet one another at the door, distribute communion).  As we add this concern to the litany of pressures many people are feeling, this is a good time to reclaim the gift of our healing liturgies, as we invite people to ask for God's healing grace in their emotional, spiritual, and physical dimensions of their lives.

LOPPW: Speaking Out On Behalf of Our Neighbors
By elcamsadmin - Monday, April 13, 2009 :: 331 Views :: Synod News
The current economic climate continues to impact thousands of lives throughout south-central Wisconsin. During times like this we have a role as the church to live out our calling to love and serve our neighbors in need, and to work for justice.

This may seem easier said than done, especially when we already feel overwhelmed by the growing burdens being placed on our members and congregations.  More and more, pastors and congregations are asking what can be done in our state to provide help for the multitude of those now living with hunger.  These are the right questions to ask, and now during our state budget deliberations this is the time to ask.

The Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin (LOPPW) is a ministry of advocacy on behalf of the Greater Milwaukee Synod and the other five synods with congregations in Wisconsin.  We partner with the ELCA World Hunger Program and the ELCA Washington, DC Office to work with Lutheran Christians on legislation and policy that addresses hunger in Wisconsin.

The Death of Pastor Allan Hauck
By elcamsadmin - Monday, February 23, 2009 :: 568 Views :: Synod News
Dear Friends in Christ,

Grace to you and peace from God our Creator, and from our risen Savior, Jesus Christ.  On Monday, February 16, the Rev. Dr. Allan Hauck died at the Lincoln Lutheran Care Facility in Racine. He was surrounded by his wife, Shirley, and his daughters, Tammy and Debbie.  Allan was 83 years old and had in recent years suffered from a number of health complications, physical concerns that never diminished his spirits.

I remember visiting Allan in his room in the week before Christmas in a setting where the staff adored him, a devotion that arose from his own generous spirit.  Displayed there were Christmas cards and decorations from his children and (four) grandchildren, but most prominent in his room was his ever-present stack of books.  Shirley, his wife of 61 years, who spent time with him every day since his stroke three years ago, said that Allan continued to read 7-8 books/month, a practice that reflected his inquisitive nature and his devotion to higher education.

Allan Hauck attended Kenyon College and Hamma Divinity School (Springfield, OH) and received his ThD from Hartford Seminary.  He was ordained in 1947 and served at St. Mark’s/Newport, KY (1951-54) and St. Mark’s/Auburn, IN (1954-58).  The Rev. Dr. Hauck taught at Midland College, Fremont, NE from 1958-68, and then at Carthage College from 1968 until his retirement in 1989.  To speak with Allan was to enter into a conversation with a professor who loved to teach, but who also aspired even more to learn.  We have been deeply blessed by his life and his ministry.

Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly.  Today we marvel in this gift of grace as we remember our brother, Allan Hauck.  Thanks be to God.

Take the Mayo Health Assessment
By elcamsadmin - Tuesday, January 06, 2009 :: 871 Views :: Synod News
Now is the time to complete the Mayo Health Assessment in order to enhance your wellness awareness, and to qualify for financial and coaching incentives.  Take the assessment online at www.elcaforwellness.com.  By completing this simple assessment, you will earn $100 for your personal wellness account, and then receive an additional $300 by earning additional reward points. Thus far, 33.8% of possible participants have completed the survey.  We need 128 more to reach our goal of 75% and an estimated savings of $32,667 for the synod.

The ELCA Board of Pensions has continued the incentive that rewards the "employing entities" in each synod with a 2% rebate on the premiums once a synod has achieved a 75% enrollment rate for the assessment.  This means, the sooner we have 75% of our eligible plan participants enrolled, the sooner we realize these savings. For the Synod Office, this would mean a monthly savings of over $120!  Please remind your spouses and the lay workers in congregational settings who are enrolled in the ELCA Board of Pensions medical plan to take this health assessment as soon as possible.

The following information will be helpful to have ready when taking the assessment: Weight, blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, triglyceride level (fasting), and blood sugar level (fasting or non-fasting).
