LOPPW: Speaking Out On Behalf of Our Neighbors

The current economic climate continues to impact thousands of lives throughout south-central Wisconsin. During times like this we have a role as the church to live out our calling to love and serve our neighbors in need, and to work for justice.

This may seem easier said than done, especially when we already feel overwhelmed by the growing burdens being placed on our members and congregations.  More and more, pastors and congregations are asking what can be done in our state to provide help for the multitude of those now living with hunger.  These are the right questions to ask, and now during our state budget deliberations this is the time to ask.

The Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin (LOPPW) is a ministry of advocacy on behalf of the Greater Milwaukee Synod and the other five synods with congregations in Wisconsin.  We partner with the ELCA World Hunger Program and the ELCA Washington, DC Office to work with Lutheran Christians on legislation and policy that addresses hunger in Wisconsin.

ELCA TV Ads to Air This Week

The God's Work. Our Hands campaign will have a national audience this week, as two ELCA television advertisements will air on CNN, Headline News, HGTV, and the Fox News Channel.  One ad entitled "Dignity" features Trinity's Banquet, a weekly meal offered to the homeless by Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck, North Dakota. The meal is not simply a handout, but rather to nourish the body with food and the body with dignity and respect.  A second ad, "Hope" features a mother who receives education to start a business through Senegal Lutheran Mission.

ELCA Church Council Acts on Sexuality Documents

The Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America met at the Lutheran Center in Chicago on March 27-30, 2009.  The council centered its work around daily worship, frequent prayer, and Bible study. It lived into its commitment to be a "Book of Faith" council by participating in a study of Acts 3:1-16 led by Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson.

Among the items the council took action on was transmittal to the 2009 Churchwide Assembly the proposed statement "Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust", the implementing resolutions of the proposed statement and the resolutions on ministry policy.
