A South to North Missionary
2003 to 2005
PASTOR ELIAS KITOI NASARI AND FAMILY
A BLESSING FOR OUR SYNOD
During the years 2003-2005 Pastor Elias served in the Greater Milwaukee Synod, by agreement with the Diocese of Meru, as a missionary to our congregations, pastors and other leaders. During that time he spoke or preached at a majority of the synod's congregations and was often a leader at synod events. At the conclusion of his service as our missionary, there was general agreement that he had made a major impact among the people of the synod. Because of the unique nature of his rapport with people in the GM Synod, the program is not likely to be repeated in the same manner. However, the benefits indicate that other forms of pastoral or leadership exchange might well be beneficial in the future.
At the conclusion of his service to our synod, Pr. Elias, with the approval of his bishop, decided to stay in this country for a time. He has since transferred to the clergy roll of the ELCA and is serving as a pastor at Galilee Lutheran Church in Pewaukee. He and his family continue to be involved in the life of the synod and of the companionship with the Diocese of Meru.
Before becoming a pastor, Elias felt called to be a teacher. After graduating from a teacher training college, he taught at a primary school in Tanzania, and then became the principal of the school. While in that position, he felt God's call to become a pastor, so he went to the Makumira Theological Seminary near his home in the Meru region. After his graduation, he became a parish pastor, then, when the Meru Diocese was formed, he became the Assistant Bishop and Director of Evangelism for the Diocese. In 1993 he was sent to the United States to do graduate study at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. There he completed a Master of Sacred Theology degree before returning to Tanzania with his wife and three children. Pastor Elias and Elly have been married for 25 years.
Elias continues to help with congregational and synod sponsored visits to the Diocese of Meru and to our partner congregations.
